CROMWELL PLACE CAFÉ
For this project, my first in hospitality, I mixed furniture developed in the past for bars, restaurants and cafes like the Fagiolo sofa by Ignazio Gardella designed in 1965 for the American bar at the Hotel Excelsior in Venice upholstered in Kvadrat/Raf Simons yellow Byram kid mohair velvet, Von Vogelsang chairs by Philippe Starck originally designed for the Café Rothschild in 1985, Angelo Mangiarotti’s Club 44 designed in 1957 for a club at La Chaux-de-Fonds in Switzerland now produced by Agapecasa and the Tokyo stools by Rodney Kinsman designed in 1995 for the Groucho Club custom finished in red with Connolly Matador red leather seats.
The rest of the furniture was selected to echo the curves of the original oval mirrors that cover the walls including the Sella poufs by Corrado Corradi Dell’Acqua from 1961 upholstered in yellow Safire bouclé by Sacho, Pen tub chairs produced by A.G. of Barcelona reupholstered in caramel Connolly leather, Bentwood chairs for Allmilmö, Germany from 1980 stripped of their paint and the 210 P armchair designed by Gebrüder Thonet.
Curtains are made from raw-cut Kvadrat Divina MD designed by Finn Sködti, in a warm melange tone. Carpets designed by Vinson&Co feature an abstracted warped check pattern in yellow and jute were hand-tufted by CC Tapis in 100% wool. Wall and celling lighting is by Michael Anastassiades and tables feature rechargeable Gustav hospitality table lamps by Vincent van Duysen for Flos.
Accessories follow the circular/cylinder theme include a 1960’s round teak tray table, attributed to Hans Bolling, from Denmark, a 1955 aluminium umbrella stand, used as a vase, by Ettore Sottsass for Rinnovel, an Italian cylindrical coat and umbrella stand from the 1960s and a set of dried Kangaroo paw flower vases by Shannon Clegg.
